The essay must be 6-8 paragraphs in length, have a clear thesis statement, and be well developed with support (3 quotes, 9 lines maximum; in MLA format) from the plays to qualify your thesis. You need to consider the various elements of drama that we have analyzed, especially when considering the purpose of a writing a play. Take into consideration plot, language, dialogue, setting, imagery, character, symbolism and , perhaps, societal constructs such as morals and values, ethics, and justice. The majority of the essay must be objective analysis created by you- the author. This means 80% of the essay must be analysis that focuses on the use of the elements of drama to develop the concept in the prompt. The remaining 20% should be textual support only from the plays listed with the prompt you selected. You should also include a paragraph analyzing the plays using 1 or 2 critical theories (chapter 9). Do not start a paragraph by referencing a play. A paragraph should start with objective analysis about a point in the thesis. A good format for the body paragraphs is: 3-4 sentences about the use of an element of drama by playwrights, in general, not specific playwrights- just playwrights overall. Then reference a play, bring in a couple of lines for support, include line or page numbers in MLA format. This should be followed by a qualifying sentence; then back to objective analysis about the topic of the paragraph.
