The Assignment You will write a single lesson plan that will be taught to children 24-35 months old in a child care classroom. Your lesson will be developed as a result of your observation in a 2-year-old classroom. Instructions To begin planning for two-year-olds, you will need to ensure that you understand the development of this age. Review the observing development assignment and your earlier observations of a two-year-old child. You will also want to review the development of two-year-olds in any resources you have available to you. NC Foundations for Early Learning and Development will also be a tool you will utilize for this project. Once you have completed the review of the resources mentioned above, you will conduct a 2-4 hour observation of a two-year-old classroom. You should take paper and pen with you to take notes about children’s play, interests, and conversations. Your notes will be submitted with this assignment. On your notes, you should indicate the START and END time for your observation as well as the date, time, location, and teacher’s name/contact information. Your observation notes should include direct quotes from the children and objective descriptions of the play you saw children participating in during your observation. You will want to note what the children are playing and listen to their conversations with the goal in mind of using this observation to inform your planning and carrying out of the lesson plan, which you will create. During your observation, you are also welcome to interact with children so that you can get to know them better. Using NC Foundations of Early Learning and Development (NCFELD), you will review the domain and goals related to the focus of your lesson plan. You will choose no more than two appropriate goals from NCFELD. Again, using NCFELD, you will then review the Developmental Indicators for the goals you chose in step 2. Note that the Developmental Indicators are in columns by age category. Identify the developmental indicator that aligns with your activity from Step 1 and the goals identified in Step 2. Again, be sure to choose developmental indicators that would be appropriate for most two-year-olds. Page 5 in NCFELD contains a yellow box titled “Age Periods,” which will be helpful to you. Using the provided lesson plan template, you will complete the entirety of the lesson plan on the template provided. This lesson plan will require you to plan the goals, objectives, materials, introduction, exploration, Facilitation/Inquiry and Integration/Discovery, Individualization, Assessment, and Home Connection portions. There is helpful text within the lesson plan template that will provide additional guidance for you. Once you have completed your first observation and written your lesson plan, you will then need to teach your lesson plan to the same group of children you observed earlier. You will need to coordinate this with the classroom teacher. You are expected to be prepared to teach the lesson and interact with the children. If you use materials that the classroom does not have on hand (which is not recommended), you should provide those materials yourself.
