To what extent do you agree and/or disagree, given what you have learned about the history to ca. A.D. 1600 ?

YOU CAN ONLY ANSWER THESE QUESTIONS FROM LECTURE AND PRIMARY SOURCES: NO OUTSIDE RESEARCH! ANSWER IN YOUR OWN WORDS ONLY ALSO NO CITING SO IT NEEDS TO BE ONLY IN YOUR OWN WORDS!! MUST BE ATLEAST 1-2 PARGRAPHS OR MORE FOR EACH QUESTION.. Be sure to use specific evidence to prove your case. A stronger essay raises, and deals with, counter-arguments rather than ignores them. You should also note that all of the questions require you to draw connections, even if in the form of contrasts, between lectures. You cannot answer any of these questions drawn solely on one lecture. So you should be working on seeing how the lectures relate to each other. 1. “The West/Europe in the period ca. 1000 – ca. 1648 was dominated by the long, constant rise of the clergy to a position of dominance over society in general and kings in particular. It is the story of the triumph of the idea of ‘Christendom.’” To what extent do you agree and/or disagree? Be sure to discuss the High Middle Ages, the Late Middle Ages, and the Reformation and its results in your answer. EXPLAIN. 2. “The idea of ‘Christendom’ alone, and not other needs and forces, explains all political, social, and religious conflict in the West/Europe ca. 1000-1648.” To what extent do you agree and/or disagree, given your understanding of the High Middle Ages, the Late Middle Ages, and the Reformation and its results. EXPLAIN. 3. Compare and contrast Christian conquest and rule over non-Christians in the following regions: Spain, the Middle East, and the Americas. EXPLAIN. 4. “For a person in the West in 2024, looking at the history of the West is like looking into a fun- house mirror. You see an image of yourself and your society, but the image is a distorted one. What is reflected looks—and does not look—like you and your society.” To what extent do you agree and/or disagree, given what you have learned about the history to ca. A.D. 1600 in this course? If you agree, is there any purpose to looking in such a “mirror”? If you disagree, is the study of history pointless? Explain and justify whatever answer you give. (Some issues you might want to consider: separation of church and state (or lack of same); religious pluralism; constitutional government; ideas about the individual versus the community.) Bear in mind that, as in any essay, you need to answer the question fully and back your argument with specific evidence. Remember: this question is here to help you, but you need to take it seriously. ( I will send the word document tomorrow with the lectures and primary sources)
