For this assignment you are asked to describe a position you would like to hold in the future–your ideal job, or even a position you currently hold–in a few paragraphs and talk about your responsibilities. Then, based on the nature of your responsibilities develop a code of ethics. Make sure to cite any item that you borrow from existing codes at the end of each bullet point.(At least 10 item bullets)
Here are things that I am looking for in your submissions:
Did you provide enough information and context about your job?
Do the items on your code directly address your responsibilities?
Did you include at least 3 original items?
Is your code 10 items long?
Do you have more than 10 items in your code? (if so, explain why you definitely need to exceed the limit.)
Did you cite each borrowed item individually?
Do the items on your code prioritize ethics over personal/financial gains? In other words, are you an ethical decision-maker?
Is your code personalized, cohesive, written in the same point of view? or is it a patchwork of sentences in different tenses written in different points of views?
If you are using subheadings did you just copy subheading from an existing code or did you come up with original and thoughtful subheadings?
For example:
If you would like to be a journalist, talk about your paper’s/channel’s/station’s reach (is it a small circulation community paper, or a large circulation national paper? National radio? Cable news?), talk about your target audience (are they predominantly young? Adults? People interested in a particular activity like sports or fishing? People affiliated with a certain political ideology?), explain your job descriiption (are you on a particular beat? Do you mostly write articles? Create news packages? Or go on air?), and discuss your responsibilities (are you in charge of social media in addition to your column? Are you responsible for bringing in guests? Will you be asked to produce sponsored content or read ads on air? Do your responsibilities include hiring and firing people?)
Then, come up with ethical items that address your responsibilities:
If you are in charge of hiring/firing people, will you do anything to ensure you have a diverse staff? What will you do to ensure you have a safe and respectful working environment?
If you are in charge of social media, what ethical guidelines will inform your decision to post something? Do you want to be the first to break the news? What will you do if there are additional developments?
Will you approach topics differently if you are serving a small community as opposed to the whole nation?
If you are in charge of inviting guests, will you do so solely based on their expertise or also based on their point of view and political affiliations?
