Developmental Psychology Lab: What will your research add to existing literature (fill a gap, extend a previous study, etc.)?

The purpose of this assignment is to help you collect your research project ideas so they can be reviewed and approved by the Instructor and TA.

1. What is(are) your group’s research question(s)?
Possible research ideas:
– How does parent involvement influence a child’s interest in literacy?
– How does adult scaffolding with toddlers impact their engagement with early literacy activities?

2. What are your hypotheses? (Include at least 2.)

3. For each hypothesis, explain why you hypothesize what you did (use existing literature to support your ideas).

4. What will your research add to existing literature (fill a gap, extend a previous study, etc.)?
Possible literature resources:
– Wildova, R., & Kropáčková, J. (2015). Early childhood pre-reading literacy development. Procedia-Social and Behavioral Sciences, 191, 878-883.
– Hutton, J. S., Phelan, K., Horowitz-Kraus, T., Dudley, J., Altaye, M., DeWitt, T., & Holland, S. K. (2017). Story time turbocharger? Child engagement during shared reading and cerebellar activation and connectivity in preschool-age children listening to stories. PLOS ONE, 12(5), e0-e0177398.

“Our findings suggest a potential cerebellar “boost” mechanism responsive to child engagement level that may contribute to emergent literacy development during early childhood, and synergy between caregiver and child factors during story sharing.”
caregiver-child interactions increase children’s engagement. The cerebellum was identified to have an increase in activity that might contribute to literacy development

5. What age group will you test and WHY (use existing literature to support your ideas)?

6. Provide a descriiption of the method that you plan to use. How will you operationally define your variables? Be as specific as possible.
