Cases help with application of the concepts and exposure to the latest evidence or research on a topic AND they allow students to learn more about topics that may not be exhaustively addressed in the course.
Students are expected to choose a covered topic (including readings) and develop a case study that addresses the topic. The cases should be as realistic as possible, but do not have to be based on an actual patient.
Before finalizing your work, you should:
be sure to read the assignment descriiption carefully(as displayed above);
consult the Grading Rubric(under Course Resources) to make sure you have included everything necessary; and
utilize spellingand grammar checkto minimize errors.
Your writing assignment should:
follow the conventions of Standard English(correct grammar, punctuation, etc.);
be well ordered, logical, and unified, as well as original and insightful;
display superior content, organization, style,and mechanics; and
use APA 7th edition
The case should include:
Presentation: You may create a full H&P or present as you would a Grand Rounds case, but you must include all pertinent patient information (patient presentation, chief complaint, HPI, social, family and past medical history, ROS, current medications, etc.), and objective data (physical exam findings, labs, diagnostics, etc.). List your top 3 differential diagnoses followed by your final diagnosis.
Plan: Make a complete and realistic EBP treatment plan with pharmacologic management that includes multiple treatment options, choice of intervention (This may be where you want to include patient factors that affect your decision. It is helpful to have a twist or issue in the case to discuss), and influencing patient factors (i.e., cost, allergies, commercial influence, etc.). Include your non-pharmacologic options here also (they will be discussed in the next section).
Discussion: Between the final diagnosis and plan, you will present the evidence to support your final diagnosis. Discuss all treatment options (both pharmacologic and nonpharmacologic) presented in the plan. Your discussion should be based on the LATEST evidence/guidelines so it is best to have a topic that you can find recent research. Familiarize yourself with the factors that should be included when making treatment decisions and add them to your case so your discussion can tie into your evidence.
